 REMEMBERING TREFOR

I was greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Trefor Thomas. Trefor was a long time stalwart of Marple Chess Club and will be greatly missed. Back in the days when I used to captain the Marple teams Trefor was always so helpful to me, being willing to turn out for matches at short notice. I will miss his friendship, kindness and wise counsel. Although extremely modest about it Trefor was very clever and an extremely knowledgeable historian. I was impressed but not surprised to see him appear on  the Michael Portillo television series "Great British Railway Journeys" explaining in great depth how George Bradshaw produced his railway timetables.

Here's a game Trefor won in just ten moves in a Stockport League match a few years ago. In his self-deprecating manner he described it as "an interesting example of coarse chess"
