Chorlton A v Marple A

So near and yet so far. They had a much stronger team than in the match at Marple two weeks ago (average grade 167 instead of 140). We were outgraded on every board (not for the first time this season), but lost by only the smallest possible margin. Congratulations to Terry on beating an opponent graded more than 30 points higher. Also thanks to Barrie for agreeing to play at very short notice, and giving Alan Beresford (graded 62 points higher!) a very tough game, and (last but not least) giving Terry and me a lift back to Marple. (Barrie isn't on email, so won't see this -- we did give him our thanks last night.)

The next A team match is scheduled to be at home against Stockport Blues on Thu 13 Jan. Since the function room in the Navi may be unavailable that week (because of refurbishment -- hopefully to the heating), we may suggest to Stockport that we switch our home and away games: in that case, we'd be away on Thu 13 Jan and at home on Thu 17 Mar.

Cheers, Tony

The B team claimed another win on Monday evening, this time against Wilmslow B .

SDCL DIV 3 29/11/2010

Wilmslow B RESULT Marple B

1 Dave Booth 0.5 0.5 Jeff Barlow
2 Tony Flynn 0 1 Peter Kelly
3 Tony Guest 1 0 Roy Phillips
4 Mike Garvin 0 1 Barrie Edwards
5 Terence Horrocks 0 1 Neil Dainty

TOTALS 1.5 3.5

Winning is getting to be a habit (4 from 4) though this victory was much narrower than in other recent matches. Barrie managed another win, again it was an unusually protracted affair with his opponent losing on time though material ahead. Peter had a good endgame win converting a single extra pawn advantage and Neil continued his unbeatable form with a quick win. Well done all.

The last match before Christmas is at home on Thursday 16th December versus Stockport D. Would eligible players please let me know if they are available for this please?

Marple B vs East Cheshire C

Well done all for a very good team performance.  Those that weren't there
will be sad to have missed a rare "I Spy" 25 points as Barrie was still
playing his (first) game well after 10pm!  It was rare endgame practice for
him.

So far that is three wins out of three for the B team.  Our next match is an
away fixture on Monday 29th November against Wilmslow B which is likely to
prove much more challenging.

If any eligible players are not available for this please let me know.

Cheers,

Jeff

Marple A -v- Stockport Reds

As  acting captain for the night, I arrived to find the function room plunged into darkness and the match being set up downstairs.  Apparently, we couldn't get access to the light switch!

A bit of discussion about the board order resulted in Glen playing 1, George 2, me on 3 and Michael on 4 against a Stockport Reds team that, although strong, we all felt we had a chance against.

Jeff was first to finish.  He played an appealing looking Bxh7+ sacrifice but the follow up wasn't quite there and he ended up a piece down.  Michael and Glen then finished at about the same time - Michael always having an edge, seemingly always one tempo ahead and with his opponents king stuck and blocking his own pieces he finished it nicely.  Glen looked like he was going to hold David Hulmes but unfortunately one mistake and that was it.  I had an advantage throughout my game but then an oversight let it slip and I was glad to get a draw although further analysis suggests that I was hasty and could have played on.

So we needed 1.5/2 on the last two games.  Terry was defending stoically but unfortunately his opponent had too much pressure and crashed through.  That left George, always in control and delivering the crushing blow just before his opponent was due to seal a move. Although Mike Taylor took the position away to look at he quickly realised it was hopeless and resigned.

So a 2.3-3.5 loss, although it could have easily been different.  One thing is sure, we can compete in this division!

Div 3: Ashton vs Marple B

A narrow victory in the end, but well done all; a good team effort. Our
team strength was pretty evenly spread but theirs was a little top heavy ...
not that I am making excuses of course .....

Our first home fixture of the season is on Thursday 18th November versus
East Cheshire C. Would eligible players let Jeff know if they are available,
please?
