1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 c5 4.c3 e6 5.Bd3 Nc6 6.Nbd2 Bd6 7.0–0 0–0 8.dxc5 Bxc5 9.e4 [9.b4] 9...Qc7 10.exd5 [10.Qe2 b6!? 11.e5 Ng4 12.Bxh7+ Kxh7 13.Ng5+ Kg8 14.Qxg4 Qxe5 with a decent game for black] 10...exd5 [10...Nxd5 11.Ne4 Be7 is also pleasant for black] 11.Nb3 Bd6 [11...Bb6] 12.Re1 h6 [12...Bg4 13.h3 Bh5 14.Bg5 I didn't want the bishop to come to g5.  I briefly considered a pawn sac 14...Ne4 15.Bxe4 dxe4 16.Rxe4 but I get very little for the pawn other than the bishop pair] 13.h3 Bd7 14.Bd2 A bit passive [14.Nbd4 Nxd4 15.Nxd4 Rfe8 16.Be3 I suppose I very slightly prefer white here, though objectively it's probably equal; 14.Be3 Rfe8 (14...Ne4 15.c4) ] 14...Rfe8 15.Qc2 a6 [15...Ne4 Again I spent precious minutes analysing a dubious pawn sacrifice wanting to 'mix' things up 16.Bxe4 dxe4 17.Rxe4 Nb4 18.Qb1 and again I didn't beleive black should have enough for the pawn.  I've played perfectly reasonable moves up to now but I've already spent 45 of my 90 minutes which is poor time management as the position is relatively simple - the battle is ahead! 18...Rxe4 19.Qxe4 Re8 20.Qb1 Nc6 the computer thinks white has a very small advantage which I agree with] 16.Nbd4 Na5 17.Bf5?! this releases some of the tension which helps black a little here as my pieces come to good squares [17.b3!?; 17.Nf5 Bf8 18.Rad1 Nc4 19.Bc1 Rac8=] 17...Nc4 18.Bxd7 Qxd7 19.Rxe8+ Rxe8 20.Re1 Ne4 21.Bc1 Rc8 [the computer suggests  21...Bb8!? setting a trap which I hadn't seen 22.Nd2? Nxf2! 23.Kxf2 (23.Rxe8+ Qxe8 24.Kxf2 Qe3+ 25.Kf1 Qxd4 26.cxd4 Ne3+ 27.Ke2 Nxc2µ very nice !) 23...Rxe1 24.Kxe1 Bg3+ 25.Ke2 Qe8+ 26.Ne4 (26.Kf3 Qe3+ 27.Kg4 Qf4+ 28.Kh5 Qh4#) 26...dxe4µ] 22.Nd2! good defence 22...Ncxd2 23.Bxd2 b5 24.a3 a5 25.f3?! looks wrong to me, weakening the dark squares around the king [I expected 25.Qd3 b4 (25...Rb8 is probably better) 26.axb4 axb4 27.cxb4 Nxd2 28.Qxd2 Rc4 29.Nc2 but this is a much better version than the note to move 28 as white hasn't weakened his position with f3] 25...Nxd2 26.Qxd2 b4 27.axb4 axb4 28.Qd3 [28.cxb4 Rc4 I thought whites position looked a bit loose here 29.Nc2 Qc6 (29...Qc8? 30.Qxd5²) 30.Re2 Bg3 whites king looks a little vulnerable to bank rank ideas] 28...bxc3 29.bxc3 g6 30.Kh1?! [30.Kf1!?] 30...Bb8 [30...Rc4] 31.Qb5? [31.Kg1 Qd6 32.Kf1³ black is a little better due to whites vulnerable king but there is no knock-out blow in sight] 31...Qd6? A bit careless as 31...Qc7 isn't very difficult.  Here I played 31...Qd6 missing that I can't play 33...Rxc3 due to 34.Qxb8 [31...Qxb5 32.Nxb5 Bg3 33.Rc1 Rc5 34.Nd4 and now after the game I found an interesting idea 34...Bf4 (during the game I only looked at 34...Be5 35.Ne2 and here I stopped calculating after 35...d4 as I thought white could play 36.c4 though actually 36.cxd4 and he is protecting c1!) Unfortunately 35.Rd1 a) 35.Rc2 Be3 (35...Be5? 36.Re2! (36.Ne2 d4–+) ) 36.Nb3 (36.Ne2 d4–+) 36...Rc8µ; b) 35.Nb3 Rc8 (35...Rb5 36.Nd4) 36.Rc2 Be5 (36...Rb8 37.Nd2; 36...Be3) 37.Rd2 (37.Kg1 Rxc3 38.Rxc3 Bxc3 39.Kf2µ) 37...Rxc3 38.Rxd5 Bg3 39.Rb5 Re3–+; 35...Rxc3 36.Ne2 Rc4 37.Nxf4 Rxf4 38.Rxd5 defends rather easily; 31...Qc7! 32.f4 (32.Re8+?! Kg7 33.Kg1 (33.f4 is relatively best 33...Qxc3 34.Ne6+ Kf6 35.Rxc8 Qxc8 36.Nc5 Bxf4 37.Qf1 g5–+) 33...Qxc3 34.Ne6+ Kf6 35.Rxc8 Qe1+ 36.Qf1 Bh2+ 37.Kxh2 Qxf1–+) 32...Qxf4 33.Nf3 Kg7µ] 32.Re8+ Kg7 33.Kg1 Rxe8 [33...Rxc3? 34.Qxb8+-] 34.Qxe8 Qh2+ 35.Kf1 Bg3 36.Qe3 [I was hoping for 36.Ne6+? Kf6–+; 36.Ne2 Qh1+ 37.Ng1 Bh2 38.Qe3] 36...Be5 [36...Qh1+ 37.Qg1 Qxg1+ 38.Kxg1 Be5 39.Ne2] 37.Qf2 Qh1+ a trap... 38.Ke2 [38.Qg1 here I thought the king and pawn ending might be winning for me, though I wasn't sure about 43.Kf4 38...Qxg1+ 39.Kxg1 Bxd4+ 40.cxd4 Kf6 41.Kf2 Ke6 42.Ke3 Kd6 43.Kf4! (43.Kd3 was my main line and this clearly does lose 43...Kc6 44.Kc3 (44.Ke3 this is too late now 44...Kb5 45.Kf4 f6 46.h4 Kc4 47.h5 gxh5 48.Kf5 Kxd4 49.Kxf6 Ke3–+) 44...Kb5 45.Kb3 g5 46.g3 h5 47.h4 (47.f4 gxf4 48.gxf4 h4 49.f5 f6 50.Kc3 Ka4 51.Kd3 Kb4 52.Ke3 Kc4 53.Kf4 Kxd4 54.Kg4 Ke3 55.Kxh4 d4–+) 47...gxh4 48.gxh4 f6 49.f4 f5 50.Kc3 Ka4–+) 43...f6 44.g4 (44.h4! h5 (44...Kc6? 45.h5 gxh5 46.Kf5 Kb5 47.Kxf6 Kc4 48.Ke5+-) 45.g4 Ke6=) 44...Kc6 45.h4 Kb5 46.h5! [59.Kg4 I was intending 59...Ke4 and hoping to complicate matters.  The following is some computer analysis of what happens if black tries hard to win 60.Kxh4 Ke3 61.Nc1 Bxc3 62.Kg5 Kd2 63.Nb3+ Kc2 64.Nc5 d4 65.Kxg6 Bb4 66.Ne4 Kd3 67.Kf5 and black certainly can't win - in fact he has to work hard to draw 67...Ke3 68.h4 (68.g4 d3 69.g5 Bf8 70.h4 Be7 a remarkable defensive concept!!) 68...d3 69.h5 Bf8 70.g4 Bh6 an incredible technical draw!! 71.g5 Bxg5 72.Kxg5 Kxe4 73.h6 d2 74.h7 d1Q 75.h8Q=] 59...Bb6+? [59...Bxc3 A double blunder - as at move 31! 60.g3 hxg3 61.Nxg3 This looks drawish but white can be made to suffer - although not for long given my lack of time !] 60.Kd3 [60.Nd4? g5 61.Kd3 Bxd4 62.cxd4+ Kf4 63.Ke2 Ke4–+] 60...Ba7 61.c4 should be the losing move [61.Nc1 and there is no way through for black 61...Kf4 (61...Kf5 62.Ne2 g5 63.Nc1 g4 64.hxg4+ Kxg4 65.Ne2=) 62.Ne2+ Ke5] 61...dxc4+ 62.Kxc4 Ke4 63.Nc3+ and now with 80 seconds left I blundered - I shouldn't allow his king access to d3 so easily.  After 63...Ke3 white can attempt to reach a fortress but it appears black can win anyway 63...Kf4?

WHITE RESIGNED 0 - 1

however the position is drawn!!
